The holidays are a time for family and friends, food and traditions, and reminiscing about the past and hoping for a bright future. But for many people, the holidays can also be a time of challenges. That is especially true this year thanks to inflation, which is making everything from food and fuel to warm clothing and utility bills cost significantly more now than it did this time last year. Here at Food Bank of the Rockies, even with the bulk discounts and donations from partners we receive, sourcing traditional American Thanksgiving food items — including turkeys, stuffing, sweet potatoes, corn, gravy, and instant potatoes — has cost an average of 25% more in 2022 than 2021. Likewise, sourcing ingredients for traditional Navidad feasts — including corn husks, masa flour, ground pork and beef, dried chiles, and black and pinto beans — has cost an average of 11% more. For the average consumer, those prices at the stores are likely even higher. To help as many of our neighbors as possible get the foods they want and need for the holidays, we are partnering with places like Volunteers of America and the Adams County Sheriff’s Department to provide them with food to distribute to their communities. Every year, we start sourcing food for the holidays months in advance to ensure we get high-quality items as affordably as possible to facilitate these distributions — which anyone can access at no cost to them. You helped make that possible with your generosity over the last year, and we are so thankful for you. “I like seeing different members of the community and feeling that direct impact. You never know what’s going on, even [with] somebody living so close to you. It’s good to be able to help out.” - Alex, mobile pantry volunteer
